Not reliably — metal blocks the NFC signal the same as it would with any tap chip. Stick it on the wall, trim, or cabinet face next to the equipment instead of directly on a metal panel door or furnace cabinet. A few inches to the side still puts it exactly where someone's eyes go when something's wrong.
It's solid printed plastic with an adhesive backing, built for indoor utility spaces — not meant for direct outdoor weather exposure, but fine with the temperature swings and dust of a basement, attic, or furnace closet.
No. NFC tap-to-open is built into iPhone (7 and newer) and most Android phones from the last several years. No app, no pairing, no Bluetooth.
